So many colleges have those outdoor/orientation programs for incoming freshman. You hike, you kayak, (you knit, at some schools), and you talk. You meet your forever friends. The ones you call when you're 46 and relive that time you almost got sprayed by that skunk when you first entered the Hundred Mile Wilderness.
But what if you're the daughter of the guy who set off the explosives at the Boston Marathon? Do you sit in the campfire circle and invent a story about who your parents are (or aren't)? Do you even go on the orientation program?
Or any program? Ever?
What if you were three years old when your father made you infamous? Because, she's real. This little girl. She exits somewhere out there. And I'm heartbroken for her. There will doubtless be people who hate her by association. Who taunt her. Ridicule her.
And how do you explain to her what her lineage is? Or why her father hasn't come home?
Mostly, though, how can anyone with children ask them to shoulder the burden of their own lunacy?
